Ion-induced swelling and volume phase transition of polyelectrolyte gels

Abstract eng:
This paper presents a theoretical model for equilibrium swelling of polyelectrolyte gels immersed in ionic solutions. By varying the ion concentrations in the external solution, the polyelectrolyte gel may undergo a smooth transition in the swelling ratio or a discontinuous volume phase transition. The theoretical model is further extended for the cases with mixed solvents and compared closely with experiments.
