Optimal multimaterial composite structures and optimal designs

Abstract eng:
Technological capabilities, such are 3d printing and microfabrication, allow a huge variety of structures to be manufactured for roughly the same price, and one wants to know “the best” structure, or how composite microstructures can be optimized. There is no gap between optimal designs and the optimal composites that are structures at at the micro level. So far, the vast majority of related results deals with two-material composites because of theoretical limitations. Meanwhile, numerous applications call for the optimal design of multimaterial composites, or of porous composites made of two materials and void. The paper describes various structures of optimal multi-material composites, the bounds of their effective properties that are achievable by these structures, and optimal designs from several materials. We show designs from two elastic materials and void.
