Determination of frictional slip zone from a perfect bond solution

Abstract eng:
A variety of solutions exist for stress fields on perfectly bonded interfaces. Such solutions are often singular near the edge of contact. However these stress fields are not relevant for a frictional interface if the ratio of shear to the magnitude of the normal stress exceeds the coefficient of friction. The determination of the corresponding friction solution with stick and slip zones can be quite complicated, although some solutions have been obtained for special cases. In this paper a method is developed which allows the length of the frictional slip zone as well as the magnitudes of the stresses in the slip zones to be determined from the solution for a perfect bond without the need to re-solve the complete friction problem.
