Universal meshes for a crack with triple junctions

Abstract eng:
The universal meshes is an efficient way to handle problems with evolving domains or discontinuities by only perturbing a fraction of vertices of a fixed background (universal) mesh at every time step. In particular, it was adapted to problems with a simple propagating crack in an earlier contribution. In this work, we have generalized the formulation to the case of a branched crack with one or multiple triple junctions. This generalization will be useful for simulating dynamic crack propagation such as that generated by an impact.
