Modelling of material uncertainties in long fibre reinforced thermoplastics

Abstract eng:
The present contribution is concerned with an investigation into the material uncertainties in long fibre reinforced thermoplastic materials (LFT) with disordered microstructure. In a preliminary experimental investigation, the local strains on standard size specimens are determined using an optical grey-scale correlation system. Based on the results, the probability distributions for the effective elasticity parameters are determined. For the consideration of the material uncertainties in structural analyses, a probabilistic elasticity model is proposed, treating the local fibre volume fraction as well as the parameters controlling the fibre orientation variability as random variables. In a validation of the numerical predictions against the experimental observations, the model proves to be accurate and numerically efficient.
