Use of Seismic Data for Monitoring Aquifers

Abstract eng:
This study focuses on developing computational methods for estimating groundwater volumes from seismic measurements. Here, the spectral element (SE) method [1] is used for solving the forward model that characterizes propagation of seismic waves. The inverse problem is solved in the Bayesian framework [2]. The SE method has been commonly used in computational fluid dynamics [1], but it has recently gained popularity in seismology [3,4]. The SE method combines the accuracy of the global pseudospectral method with the flexibility of the FE method. The statistical inversion method allows the efficient use of a priori information related to modeling and measurements uncertainties of the problem. It this study, the statistical inverse problem is formulated and preliminary results with simulated data are presented.
