Iterative Pushover-Based Procedure for Seismic Performance Assessment of Infilled Reinforced Concrete Frames With Consideration of Shear Failure of Columns

A methodology for probabilistic seismic performance assessment of infilled reinforced concrete frames with consideration of effects of masonry infills on the shear demand and failure of columns was recently introduced [1]. It is based on an iterative procedure that involves pushover analysis, post-processing of the analysis results using limit-state checks of the components, and model adaptation if shear failure of columns is detected. The advantage of such approach is that the effects of the shear failure of the columns can be approximately simulated even in the case when the reinforced concrete frames with masonry infills are modelled by means of simplified nonlinear models that are not capable of the direct simulation of these effects. The proposed procedure goes beyond the limit-state checks of components prescribed in several structural codes, because these checks are, in the proposed procedure, actually embedded in the pushover analysis. Therefore, the damage representation, which represents an important ingredient in the performance-based earthquake engineering, can be more realistically obtained. Firstly an overview of the methodology is presented in the paper and its application is demonstrated by means of an example of existing seven storey building (Figure 1). An emphasis is given on the uncertain parameters which controls shear demand and capacity of the columns. It was shown that the strength of the buildings and the deformation capacity are significantly overestimated if column shear failure due to the effects of masonry infills is neglected, whereas the mean annual frequency of limit-state exceedance for the analysed limit states is significantly larger than that estimated for the case if the shear failure of columns is neglected.
