A Point-Wise Coupled Fem/Rkpm Formulation for Modeling Fragmentation of Concrete Under High Strain Rate Loadings

Abstract eng:
An evolutionarily coupled finite element and meshfree formulation was developed in a previous study [1]. The formulation affords a novel capability to compute the responses of concrete structures subjected to quasi-static, blast, and impact loadings. In the previous work, the coupling / meshfree domain advances automatically using a cylinder defined by a normal and a radius that expands according to certain triggering criterion. This approach provides a much larger but less than optimal meshfree domain since it covers all the elements / nodes inside the cylinder volume. In this study, the coupling method is expanded by using a point-wise coupling technique so that the coupling / meshfree domain can treat very localized damage when the triggering criterion is met. In this approach, each integration point (or node) might define a coupling / meshfree zone (see Figure 1), whereas, only one meshfree domain is defined in the previous scheme. The coupling / meshfree zones are treated as sphere volumes in three-dimension and circular areas in two-dimension. Separating the coupling / meshfree zones in this manner makes a convenient and more accurate domain from which to track the debris mass and velocity distributions, which is of great interest in many applications. Furthermore, to improve the computational efficiency, the flexible-to-rigid contact algorithm used in the previous studies is extended to flexible-to-flexible contact [2]. With this contact algorithm, the high velocity impact penetration problem can be analyzed by Lagrangian formulation, which is more efficient than the semi-Lagrangian approach. R2
