External aerodynamics of rail vehicles

Abstract eng:
This paper is a short overview of engineering approach to study rail vehicles aerodynamics and aerodynamic interaction between the trains and vicinity infrastructures. Short list of railway aerodynamic research topics is showed - aerodynamic effects of moving vehicles and passing trains, train slipstream effects, pressure pulses on train passage through a tunnel, cross-wind effect, etc. The contribution deals with an industrial application of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method in this field. Chances and possibilities to simulate aerodynamic load of rail vehicles during various operating regimes and situations are shortly discussed.
