Dynamic properties of wind-excited linked tall buildings considering both intra- and interbuilding structural couplings

Abstract eng:
Owing to urbanization and limited space in densely-populated cities, high-rise buildings have frequently been built extremely close to each other. In turn, there is a growing trend of linked building systems (LBSs), i.e., systems comprising tall buildings in close proximity connected via horizontal structural links such as skybridges, skygardens, and skypools. In addition, recent trends of irregular and more complex structural systems are likely to result in buildings having eccentricities between the mass and stiffness centers of each floor. These eccentricities then lead to intra-building structural coupling between directional wind-induced response components of each building. Although the inter-building structural coupling caused by links has been investigated, the effect of the intra-building structural coupling on the dynamic performance of wind-excited LBS has not yet been investigated. In view of this, this paper systematically examines the effects of the intra-building structural coupling on the modal properties and dynamic responses of LBSs. First, an improved analytical evaluation model considering both the inter-building coupling caused by the link and the intra-building structural coupling has been developed for twin buildings connected by several links. Expressions for the modal properties of four representative configurations of the eccentricities are then derived by solving the associated characteristic equation. Applying these expressions to an example LBS shows that the intra-building structural coupling can cause significantly coupled modes. Eccentricities in the x direction produce coupled vibrations between the y and θ directions, whereas eccentricities in the y direction lead to 3D coupled vibrations among x, y and θ directions. Employing the results from modal analysis and wind force data measured from wind tunnel test, the wind-induced responses of a series of LBSs with different intra-building
