Quantitative relationship between surface roughness parameters obtained from building information database and wind turbulence near the ground surface

Abstract eng:
In the design of low-rise and middle-rise buildings, accurate evaluation of the design wind loads both on the main wind force resisting systems and the cladding/components is very important. For this reason, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of natural winds, which are influenced by surface roughness such as buildings, near the ground surface. With the ultimate objective of developing an evaluation method for wind turbulence near the ground surface by using a building information database, this paper proposes a method for estimating wind turbulence based on the results of field measurements and wind tunnel experiments. The vertical profiles of gust factor and turbulence intensity corresponding to a given surface roughness are presented. The turbulence intensity at any arbitrary height can be evaluated from the surface roughness parameters information defined in this study.
