Wind tunnel tests and numerical investigation in order to optimize the system of demolition of a nuclear power plant chimney

Abstract eng:
This paper deals with the activities carried out in order to optimize a demolition system for a chimney of an Italian Nuclear Power Plant, through Wind Tunnel Tests on two scale models (1:12, 1:80) and final FEM numerical investigation in order to verify the structural integrity of the chimney during the demolition process. The experimental campaign allowed real wind load determination and pointing out on possible fluid-structure interaction phenomena such as the "vortex shedding" and "lock-in", and demonstrated the need to check beforehand in the wind tunnel the concerned structures. Therefore, the results have been extended on the 3D full-scale FEM model, addressing towards the numerical investigation of both the static and dynamic behaviour of the high chimney structure.
