Experimental study on multi-mode rain-wind induced vibrations of a flexible cable

Abstract eng:
Mechanism of rain-wind induced vibrations (RWIVs) of the stay cables of cable-stayed bridges has not been thoroughly clarified yet. Previous experimental studies mainly focused on the single-mode vibrations of rigid and segmental models. In the present study, the multi-mode RWIVs of a long and flexible cable were reproduced in the wind tunnel. Multi-mode cable vibration responses are measured by accelerometers and the upper rivulets movements are monitored and recorded by using a high-speed camera. In addition, the wake flow characteristics behind the cable model when RWIVs occur are also obtained by employing a digital particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. Structural responses of the flexible cable, evolution of water rivulets on the cable surface, flow structures in the near wake, and their interrelationships contribute to explore the excitation mechanism of RWIVs in this paper.
