Steam flow distribution in the separator of VVER 440

Abstract eng:
The reactors VVER – 440 are cooled and moderated by pressurized water – PWR. The primary coolant is subcooled in the PWR and steam is generated by transferring energy from the primary system to a lower pressure fluid in the steam generator. Steam flow from the generator reaches the high pressure turbine . After expansion in the high pressure turbine, the steam passes through a moisture separator, which is a low pressure drop separator external to the turbine. After passing through this separator, the steam is reheated before entering the low pressure turbine. Separator surfaces can suffer erosion– corrosion. Erosion rate is a function of velocity and of moisture stream. The paper deals with the influence of separator head design on flow distribution in the separator system.
