Prediction of thermally induced preload in high-speed bearing systems

Abstract eng:
Increased use of high-speed machining creates the need to predict spindle behaviour at high speeds. Particularly, prediction of bearing failures caused by excessive thermally induced preload is one of key issues in the design of high-speed machine tool spindles. There is a need for optimization of spindle bearing system and of its surroundings, which could be enabled by a coupled thermo-mechanical model. However such a model must consider all physical fields involved in the problem.
