Compression test of a timber core -- ANSYS model and moiré interferometry experiment

Abstract eng:
This paper presents results of modelling a non-standard compression test of timber, executed on small diameter cores in a special testing device. The test is a semi destructive method friendly to historic timber. The course of the test is modelled in 3D, the influence of individual input characteristics, and also their scatter, is assessed by means of rank-order sensitivity analysis. The results are correlated with experimental data of core base deformations acquired by moiré interferometry. A combined numerical and experimental approach is used in a method enabling the measured displacements of the loading head of the testing device to be converted into technically usable values characterising basic mechanical properties of the assessed timber.
