Simulation of autogenous shrinkage of young cement pastes

Abstract eng:
Autogenous shrinkage presents a serious problem in modern concretes due to various admixtures and high water demand for hydration. Microscopic underpressure in the pore water exerts inner load to the microstructure, causing shrinkage and consequently creep. This behavior is simulated via FEM, where the microstructure of cement paste is loaded directly by underpressure, at the micrometer scale. Validation shows that creep of the cement paste must be also taken into account when good quantitative prediction is expected.
