Computer simulation of ductile fracture in rod cutting process

Abstract eng:
Rod cutting is an important phase of many technological procedures, which includes fast dynamic process of ductile material fracture. Explicit FE solvers seem to be the best tool for computational simulation of such problems. In this paper, the simulation was performed by ABAQUS/Explicit, version 6.5. Finite element models were created using two types of material failure models: limit strain and Johnson-Cook model. Results of the simulation – time history of the cutting force and development of the fracture surface – were compared with experiments.
