Determination of intrinsic brittleness of concrete using fracture experiment and its simulation

Abstract eng:
Procedure for estimation of fracture process zone size of concrete as value of characteristic length which quantifies intrinsic brittleness of the material is presented in this paper. The procedure is based on the combination of results of fracture experiments – three-point bending of specimens with a central edge notch – with results of the subsequent numerical simulations of these tests by FEM program ATENA and identification of material parameters of selected model using artificial neural networks. For illustration, three types of concrete were analysed.
