Constitutive model of vascular smooth muscle cells determined using computational simulation

Abstract eng:
It is well known that vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play important role not only in vascular tone but also in arterial remodelling, healing and growth. Determination of mechanical properties of these cells is very important for understanding not only the physiology of VSMCs themselves but also the basic physiology, pathology, and mechanics of arterial wall. In the present study, a constitutive model of VSMCs of contractile and synthetic phenotypes is determined using FE computational simulation of tension tests of isolated cells. Material of the cells was modelled as homogeneous and isotropic using Mooney-Rivlin fiveparameter hyperelastic strain energy density function. The model was loaded similarly to the real experiment by micropipet displacement.
