Significance of Direct Displacement Measurement based Health Monitoring

Abstract eng:
This paper discusses the significance of health monitoring scheme based upon the direct measurement of inter-story drift displacement. The effectiveness of the use of inter-story drift displacement information in conducting structural health monitoring and damage detection for a building structure is presented. The authors' research group has recently developed noncontact type of drift displacement sensors. One of such sensors has been practically installed into a recently completed base-isolated building in Tokyo. The information on inter-story drift displacements during a seismic event not only can be used as the straightforward index of judging the structural safety or damage condition without any additional calculation involved, but also can be of help in estimating the hysteretic loops of the building stories. In this regard, the direct measurement of such displacements will fill a long-felt want in the structural health monitoring field. It may bring an innovation into the development of structural monitoring or damage detection schemes.
