Statistical Study on Evaluating Bridge Health Index based on Bridge Inspection Database

Abstract eng:
This paper presents results of an investigation of evaluating the health index (HI) of 54 bridges managed by Gifu Prefecture in Gifu City. This inspection results consist of many items for each bridge elements and evaluate the state of bridge in detail. However the currently used HI is not really suitable for maintenance purpose. Thus, this study is aiming at developing a suitable HI by making the most of the statistical analyses. This is a part of the study to develop a methodology for making road maintenance strategies based on risk. The information gained in this study is combined with other results to propose the strategy for repair and maintenance plan of the bridges in the region. This study used the inspection results of only 54 bridges in Gifu city. The study was done as a pilot research for analyzing inspection results of about 830 bridges in Gifu prefecture. However, the methodologies develop in this study as well as some of the findings on the bridge deterioration scenarios are believed to give very important suggestions for the future research.
