Reliability Evaluation of Axial Bored Pile Bearing Capacity in City of Jakarta

Abstract eng:
The prediction of axial bearing capacity of bored pile foundation depends on many factors such as bearing capacity formulae and the relevant soil parameters. The accuracy of bearing capacity formulae is obtained by comparing the predicted values and those of the results of load test. Unfortunately, the results of load test rarely show a clear failure condition, and engineers have to use a certain failure criteria to calculate the failure load of bored pile foundation at a particular site. In this study, a reliability model for axial capacity of a bored pile foundation is set up taking into account the random model error of bearing capacity formulae and the uncertainty of the associated soil parameters. A number of 30 high quality load test data collected from reports submitted to the Jakarta Municipality are utilized to evaluate the model error of bearing capacity formulae as well as the accuracy of several failure criteria. Using method of advance first order second moment (FOSM), the reliability of a single bored pile foundation is evaluated. Based on an acceptable risk target, a probability based factors of safety are proposed. The factors of safety are derived for both permanent and temporary load. Statistics of extremes are utilized to obtain the statistics of maximum earthquake load within the life time of a structure as input in the reliability evaluation.
