Reliability Evaluation of Steel Compression Members Designed with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Code

Abstract eng:
Application of reliability analysis in developing structural design codes provides a reasonable balance between safety and cost of the structures. This balance can be achieved by considering the optimum reliability index for each element and structural system. In this study, design criteria for steel compression members in current AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications (2007) are evaluated. In analysis process, latest existing data for load and resistance models including material, geometry, discretization and professional factors are taken into account. In addition, random parameters and their uncertainty are considered for a variety of slenderness values. Subsequently, Monte Carlo simulation technique with sufficient randomly generated samples is applied in numerical calculations. Obtained reliability curves for four popular steel sections indicate safe behavior of designed compression members with conservative response in some cases. Analysis results and plotted curves are discussed in detail and possible considerations for adjusting reliability indices are presented.
