Probabilistic Analysis of Excavation-Induced Basal Heave-a Case Study

Abstract eng:
This study aims at re-analyzing the basal heave of an existing excavation case by incorporating the uncertainty of undrained shear strength (su) of clay. The excavation case adopted was analyzed by Hsieh et al. (2008), in which the deterministic analysis was performed. The characteristics of stratigraphy investigated in their study are directly employed in the probabilistic analysis of this excavation case. The method for analyzing basal heave proposed by the Taiwan building code (TGS 2001) is adopted in the probability analysis of basal heave. A series of parametric study are conducted through incorporating the Monte Carlo simulation as well as considering the various COVs of su of clay. The results reveal that the probability of basal heave is higher than 0.95 when the COV of su is in the range of 0-0.3. In addition, the probability of failure with respect to FS=1.2 is higher than 0.70 when the COV is equal to 0.3.
