Stochastic Analysis of Confined Seepage under Hydraulic Structures

Abstract eng:
This paper investigated the confined flow under hydraulic structures. The hydraulic conductivity of the soil was modeled as spatially random field following lognormal distribution. Both isotropic and anisotropic heterogeneity fields were studied. It is shown that the seepage flow produced from the stochastic solution was smaller than the deterministic seepage flow. For porous media that had anisotropic heterogeneity, larger anisotropic heterogeneity ratios — the ratio of horizontal to vertical scale of fluctuation — have dramatically increased the seepage flow. This increase of flow was more pronounced at larger coefficients of variations.
