Selection of Artificial Spectrum Compatible Accelerograms for Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of RC Buildings

Abstract eng:
Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is a powerful method to modify real accelerograms such that their spectra match the design spectrum. But, there is a main question; can we use these artificial accelerograms to consider seismic behavior of buildings? To answer this, we arranged four groups accelerogram with different distances from fault rupture surface [greater than 50 km (far field), nearer than 10 km (near fault)] and various moment magnitudes (larger than 6.5, between 4.0 and 6.5). All other parameters of real accelerograms are the same. For all members of the four groups the mentioned wavelet based procedure is used. Using extensive dynamic inelastic time history analyses, seismic behavior of a typical 16-story RC building designed by Iranian Code of Practice (Standard No. 2800, the 3rd edition) is examined. The influence of parameters of the real and artificial accelerograms and dispersion of the responses are discussed, in detail.
