Numerical modelling of the damage-to-crack transition in a Gurson-type material

Abstract eng:
The present work aims at the numerical treatment of the crack propagation in engineering materials whose failure results from void initiation, growth and coalescence. With this aim in view, the objective is to describe the intermediate stage between more or less diffuse damage and the initiation of a macroscopic crack. This transient stage of damage induced deformation localisation in a narrow band necessitates a specific numerical treatment. An adapted extended finite element framework and its embedding into the existing formulation is presented and tested in fundamental numerical tests.
